Dr. Malhotra's New Website
This site is for my students and their parents. I have been teaching Science at TOHS since 2000. Currently, I'm teaching 3 courses: Physiology Honors, Scientific Research and AP Research. I got my Ph.D. in Cell Biology/Physiology from University of British Columbia, Canada and published my work in top scientific journals. I also worked as a graduate research assistant and completed my first post -doctoral research at University of British Columbia. I completed my second post-doctoral fellowship at UCSB and published my research in another American journal. I obtained teaching credentials in Biology and Chemistry from CSUN. I am very passionate about science and love to explain difficult concepts to my students at lunch time/prep period. Parents and students can communicate with me via email regarding any questions or concerns about the courses/students. I want my students to know that YOU are wonderful and I really enjoy teaching YOU all! Keep it up! |
About my Courses! |
In Anatomy CP and Physiology Honors courses, students learn about the human body and how it works. These are challenging and high level courses which involve good work ethics and critical thinking skills. Pre-requisites are: Bio CP/Honors with a B or higher grade or teacher recommendation! Both courses prepare students for premed courses in college and have hands-on labs/activities and lab reports, virtual and real dissections, simulated/virtual labs, laptop activities, reading/writing assignments, group projects/activities, professional guest speakers, field trips and much more...! For your convenience, I have compiled a Physiology lab manual for these courses; it can be downloaded from Google drive and is also available in the student store in the beginning of each semester.
The new AP Research -STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) course will be launched in the fall of 2015 and will be taught over 2 semesters. AP Seminar is a pre-requisite for AP Research and is the foundational course with a goal to build independent and critical thinkers. AP Research students are expected to bring skills and traits necessary for future academic study through the examination of multiple perspectives, evaluation of credibility of sources, and construction of arguments during their research. To learn more about the AP Capstone program and the two sequence courses included in this Diploma program, please visit the College Board links:

More Information on AP Research Course
All AP Research students must maintain a Process and Reflection Portfolio (PREP) or lab notebook throughout the year. This portfolio or lab notebook should be reviewed throughout the year as a formative assessment component of the course and should be maintained by the student as evidence of participating in research to show to academic counselors, college admission officers, and faculty members.
All AP Research students will represent TOHS at the County Science Fair competition and several of them may qualify for the State. During their investigation, students will collaborate with scientists from local colleges, universities and industry and may choose to work in one of the local labs if accepted by the expert advisors. Students are expected to practice good work ethics and use critical thinking skills throughout this course. Other AP courses (especially Stats) are recommended before you take this amazing course. Join AP Research course and be a part of the #1 TEAM in Science!
Students can also check out the AP Research folder in the Google Drive and skim through different assignments, rubrics, handouts, guidelines etc. If you cannot access the Google drive, please let me know ASAP!
February 26: Ventura County Science Fair Project Registration Deadline. 4:00 PM.

Students can follow the links on this page to check out some other Anatomy, Physiology, Scientific Research and AP Research sites used in my courses! Most lecture notes are posted here in a word format; powerpoints and other pdfs are stored in the "Google Drive" or "Dropbox" online. If you have any questions about the courses I teach, please email me!
Scientific Research is similar to AP Research without the College Board requirements. It is a UC approved lab science and gives more flexibility in the timeline etc. In this course, students learn all the lab skills and techniques, conduct literature review, find a topic of interest, come up with a research question, find the appropriate method(s) to conduct research and collect data. The course requires a lab notebook, an original research project, a poster board, a research report and presentation/defense at the County science fair. Students network and connect with local professionals throughout the course.
In addition to the above courses, I am an advisor/coordinator for the Science Club/School Science Fair (County and State), American Red Cross Club, Health Science Major Program (senior year) and AP Capstone Program at TOHS. I recommend that you join one of these clubs/programs and be a part of the Lancer family! It is a good idea to get involved in club activities on campus if you are interested in a leadership role at TOHS. If you have any other questions, please email me or come by E8 at lunch time.
A big "thank you" to all the parents who donated for AP Research -STEM course this year! We appreciate your generosity and support for these amazing science programs at TOHS. We could not have done this without YOU!
